October Days

Yesterday would have been Gordon's and my sixtieth wedding anniversary. We managed to make it to fifty-eight and a half years, so that's not too bad. The time goes by so quickly and there are so many changes in Vancouver and district since I arrived here to marry Gordon in 1947.

A few months after we were married, we moved to Burnaby from Vancouver. Friends told us we were moving to the "sticks." We stayed for ten years. In 1957, we moved to Pitt Meadows -- another backwoods. We lived there for 18 years, and then moved to another out-of-the-way place, Armstrong, B.C. What were we thinking? Another 18 years sailed by and still it was time for another change. We moved back to the lower mainland, to Coquitlam.

In yesterday's paper I saw that two high rise apartments are scheduled to be built in Pitt Meadows -- I couldn't even tell you how many there are in Burnaby. When we lived in Burnaby my children could roam for blocks around our neighbourhood. In Pitt Meadows we had acreage -- our children had horses; we kept some chickens and even had a couple of pigs at one time. This was really something for a couple of city slickers from Winnipeg.

I remember my kids would ride their bikes everywhere, and if they weren't cycling, they were walking to where they needed to go. A bike ride to the Albion Ferry and a boat ride across the Fraser River to Fort Langley was an all-day outing with their pals. Looking back, I suppose lots of exercise and ordinary food helped our kids stay slim and fit. It is a shame that nowadays the government has to give children advice on how to stay healthy.

Wonderful memories -- brings back some memories of my life as a child as well. I love the picture of the two of you.
Love, Dorothy

It's sad, but true. Quick and convenience have taken over our diets and video games and TV as a baby sitter are more common.
